Recife, Pernambuco

The state of Pernambuco (pop. 8.3 million) and its capital Recife (pop. 1.5 million) is known for it’s 187km of palmtree-lined beaches and blue-green waters, often protected by reefs in front of the beaches. The best known beach locations are Tamandaré and Porto de Galinhas; and the island of Fernando de Noronha (some 500 km off the coast!) has been named Patrimonium of Mankind by the Unesco.

Over the last 30 years, it has transformed from an agricultural to a rather industrial state; with high investments in the (petro)chemical, pharmaceutical and metallurgical industries and a growing IT core that represents 1% of the state’s GDP.

This industrial development has brought the GDP per capita to a level similar with that of Bahia, but the industry is not able to absorb all labor emigrating from the farming inland and the state remains one of those with the lowest Human Development Indexes. Not surprisingly, the capital Recife has to deal with a lot of petty crime; and it’s unfortunately one of the less safe cities in Brazil.

Recife beachfront - Boa Viagem

The best city beach is also the one with the best residential developments. Many brand new luxury apartments and penthouse are under construction along this modern beach boulevard. They are usually larger and prestigious apartments (100-400m²) with good leisure infrastructure.

The area also boasts the best restaurants in town, and the “Recife Shopping” mall has a quite decent array of shops, both in terms of quality and quantity.
